The purpose of this book is to be the first step towards teaching children to read and write, by introducing the Arabic alphabet in a “phonics” way. It is the first Arabic book based on the “mother tongue-based education” approach, which emphasizes the importance of children learning the basics of reading in the language they acquire spontaneously from their surroundings, the language they speak and understand well – the Egyptian dialect, because understanding what is read is a prerequisite for learning to read. After the child masters reading in his mother tongue, he will have acquired the basic skills to read in any other language that uses the same alphabetic symbols – including classical Arabic. Accordingly, the vocabulary of this book has been carefully selected to be identical between contemporary Arabic and the colloquial dialect spoken by the child at home. The book includes several common words in the spoken language that some may think are completely colloquial, but in fact they are words used in the classical Arabic language and all of them are mentioned in the “Dictionary of Contemporary Arabic Language”. The book includes more than 300 words and presents each letter of the alphabet through an illustrated scene that includes several words that begin with the letter in question.
